RIO FREDINAND TESTIMONIAL:
Testimonial: Rio was serenaded by the United supporters ahead of the match with Sevilla
David Moyes and Rio Ferdinand saw their big night out ruined as Seville played the part of party-poopers to perfection at Old Trafford.
The new Manchester United boss and the club’s long-serving defender will not look back on their evening with much relish after the visitors claimed a 3-1 victory.
The match was designated as a testimonial for Ferdinand, 34, and a crowd of over 40,000 turned up to pay tribute to the former England international.
But it had been decreed by Moyes beforehand that this was to be more than just an exhibition for his side ahead of the Community Shield at Wembley. However, with that showpiece in mind he was prevented from fielding a full-strength side.
Nevertheless there was a healthy sprinkling of players with Barclays Premier League experience in the line-up for the first match in front of his home crowd.
Yet the visitors stunned a stadium that was more than half-full by snatching a two-goal lead in the opening 45 minutes.
First, Seville striker Vitolo timed his run behind Chris Smalling to perfection, beating David De Gea to the ball and finding the net with a one-touch finish.
